INTRODUCTION

Reconstruction of cranial defect is commonly performed in neurosurgical operations. Many materials have been employed for repairing cranial defects. In this paper, materials used for cranioplasty, including autografts, allografts, and synthetic biomaterials are comprehensively reviewed. This paper also gives future perspective of the materials and development trend of manufacturing process for cranioplasty implants. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the intra- and post-operative performance and safety of direct three dimensional printing 3DP porous polyethylene implants in cranial reconstruction. Prefabricated porous polyethylene implants were prepared by direct 3DP, and cranioplasty implantation was performed. No complications after surgery were encountered. Excellent aesthetic results were obtained in all cases, and all the patients were satisfied with the reconstruction outcome. Bone density structure was found to ingrowth into these direct 3DP porous polyethylene implants and the content increased with increasing follow-up times. This study was a pilot study conducted in a single group and evaluated in a short-term period.


Large cranial defects still represent a challenge in neurosurgery. Currently different biomaterials are available for cranial reconstruction including titanium, acrylic.

In the worst cases, the consequences range from infections and lengthy hospitalization to implant loss and even mortality. The impact of the choice of the surgeon on the success of intervention can only be evaluated in a prospective study. The idea of collaboration between maxillofacial and neurosurgical specialists, as practiced for example in the Benelux countries, is an interesting approach, especially when it comes to difficult wound conditions or repetitive interventions on the same patient.
