Human ABO Blood Groups and Their Associations with Different Diseases

Latest news

ABO blood group system

Background: The presence or absence of blood group antigens has been associated with various diseases, with antigens also acting as receptors for infectious agents. Scanty literature is available in assessing the relative liability of blood group phenotypes to periodontal diseases. This research was conducted to determine the association of the ABO blood group and Rhesus Rh factor to periodontal diseases to assess whether they could be the predictors of periodontal diseases. Materials and Methods: A total of 1, subjects aged between 20 and 55 years were selected on a random basis. The study populations were segregated into three groups according to Ramfjord's periodontal disease index: Healthy, Gingivitis and Periodontitis.

Human ABO Blood Groups and Their Associations with Different Diseases

ABO is the best-known system for grouping blood types , though there are other methods. Within these groups, there are a further eight blood types. Every 2 seconds , a person in the United States needs blood. When a person needs a transfusion , doctors must give them the right type. The wrong blood type can trigger an adverse reaction that could be life-threatening. How does blood work, and what problems can arise? The main components of blood are:.

ABO blood group system , the classification of human blood based on the inherited properties of red blood cells erythrocytes as determined by the presence or absence of the antigens A and B, which are carried on the surface of the red cells. See blood group. Blood containing red cells with type A antigen on their surface has in its serum fluid antibodies against type B red cells. In the same way, type A red cells will be destroyed by anti-A antibodies in type B blood. Type O blood can be injected into persons with type A, B, or O blood unless there is incompatibility with respect to some other blood group system also present. Blood group O is the most common blood type throughout the world, particularly among peoples of South and Central America.

International Society of Blood Transfusion has recently recognized 33 blood group systems. Apart from ABO and Rhesus system, many other types of antigens have been noticed on the red cell membranes. Blood grouping and cross-matching is one of the few important tests that the anaesthesiologist orders during perioperative period. Hence, a proper understanding of the blood group system, their clinical significance, typing and cross-matching tests, and current perspective are of paramount importance to prevent transfusion-related complications. Nonetheless, the knowledge on blood group system is necessary to approach blood group-linked diseases which are still at the stage of research. This review addresses all these aspects of the blood groups system. Over a period of time, our understanding on blood groups has evolved to encompass not only transfusion-related problems but also specific disease association with RBC surface antigens.

Associations between the blood type and disease have been studied since the early s when researchers determined that antibodies and antigens are inherited. However, due to lack of antigens of some blood groups, there have been some contentious issues with the association between the ABO blood group and vulnerability to certain infectious and noninfectious diseases. To review different literatures that show the association between ABO blood groups and different diseases. Original, adequate, and recent articles on the same field were researched, and the researcher conducted a comprehensive review on this topic. Thus, taking out critical discussions, not only a descriptive summary of the topic but also contradictory ideas were fully retrieved and presented in a clear impression.

The blood group AB showed the least percentage of periodontal diseases. The distribution of Rh factor in all groups showed a significantly higher.
