With the exception of a few of the commoner opaque minerals, there are included only natural species the optical properties of which are sufficiently well known to permit their identification microscopic ally. The arrangement of the minerals has been changed, and the system now adopted is the familiar scientific classification of Dana, modified to some extent by advancing knowledge.

Mineralogical Society of America , Founded December 30, Mineralogy and Optical Mineralogy is a college-level textbook designed for courses in rocks and minerals, mineralogy, and optical mineralogy. It covers crystallography, crystal chemistry, systematic mineralogy, and optical mineralogy. The textbook is organized to facilitate spiral learning, with introductory through advanced chapters on each of these four topics. A chapter on hand sample identification is also included. The chapters differ in several ways from a traditional mineralogy textbook: 1 it promotes learning in a digital environment; 2 the authors use modern pedagogy; 3 it is written so that the more advanced chapters build on information learned in earlier chapters; 4 each chapter in the digital series is available separately allowing the instructor to pick and choose only those chapters needed for their specific course.

Optical mineralogy

Optical mineralogy is the study of minerals and rocks by measuring their optical properties. Most commonly, rock and mineral samples are prepared as thin sections or grain mounts for study in the laboratory with a petrographic microscope. Optical mineralogy is used to identify the mineralogical composition of geological materials in order to help reveal their origin and evolution. William Nicol , whose name is associated with the creation of the Nicol prism , is likely the first to prepare thin slices of mineral substances, and his methods were applied by Henry Thronton Maire Witham to the study of plant petrifactions. This method, of significant importance in petrology , was not at once made use of for the systematic investigation of rocks, and it was not until that Henry Clifton Sorby pointed out its value. Meanwhile, the optical study of sections of crystals had been advanced by Sir David Brewster and other physicists and mineralogists and it only remained to apply their methods to the minerals visible in rock sections.

Content Goals: This exercise is a review of formulas, atomic weights, moles and grams, and converting weights to percents, etc. Higher Order Thinking Goals: To achieve success, students must understand and apply basic chemical principles. After completing the experiments they must analyze and interpret their results.
