Revised Children's Anxiety and Depression Scale (and Subscales) (RCADS)

Background

Revised Children's Anxiety and Depression Scale (and Subscales) (RCADS)

Depression and anxiety are prevalent mental illnesses among young people. A cross-sectional, descriptive design was used to 1 explore the prevalence of depression, anxiety, and stress among youth and 2 identify to what extent certain variables related to COVID could predict depression, anxiety, and stress DAS among young people in six different countries.

Unless otherwise stated, CORC is not the developer or copyright holder of these measures. The Revised Child Anxiety and Depression Scale RCADS is a item, youth self-report questionnaire with subscales including: separation anxiety disorder, social phobia, generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder, and low mood major depressive disorder. It also yields a Total Anxiety Scale sum of the 5 anxiety subscales and a Total Internalizing Scale sum of all 6 subscales.

Child depression and anxiety have been associated with electronic media use, but the comorbidity between the two has rarely been accounted for in analyses. We examined both child and parent reports of electronic media use in relation to parent-reported child depression and anxiety. Using survey and interview data collected for 9- to year-olds from the site adolescent brain cognitive development study, we conducted generalized linear mixed models. Our results demonstrated that electronic media use was more strongly associated with depression than anxiety, and that accounting for depression significantly reduced the relationship between electronic media use and anxiety. Different categories of electronic media showed differential relationships to anxiety and depression, with video gaming and video chatting related to anxiety, but video watching related to depression. These findings provide important data to ground theories of the mechanisms that contribute to these associations.

Metrics details. Although anxiety and, to a lesser extent, depression are highly prevalent in children, these problems are, difficult to identify. ICCs for short-term stability were 0. Girls and children who indicated wishing to participate in a program targeting anxiety and depression had higher RCADS scores. Sensitivity to change analyses showed that the RCADS can detect changes in anxiety and depression symptoms in children who participated in a preventive intervention. The study showed low agreement between teacher and self-reported internalizing problems, even for children scoring above the 90 th percentile of the RCADS, indicating a high level of problems, emphasizing the need to also take child reports into account when screening for anxiety and depression in children. This study shows that the RCADS can yield reliable data on a diversity of anxiety disorders and depression in urban children aged 8—13 from very diverse ethnic backgrounds.

The RCADS-P is currently the only parent-report questionnaire that concurrently assesses youth symptomatology of individual anxiety disorders as well as depression in accordance with DSM - IV nosology. Because these disorders are not only common but also associated with significant functional impairment Bell-Dolan and Wessler ; Langley et al. Numerous measures have been designed for assessment of child and adolescent anxiety and depression. Although psychometric studies have demonstrated the utility of these instruments in multiple contexts Ollendick ; Reynolds ; Reynolds and Paget ; Saylor et al. That is, most of these instruments do not map neatly onto DSM nosology Perrin and Last , and not surprisingly, some researchers have found poor discriminant validity for several of the most widely used child self-report measures of anxiety and depression Lonigan et al. Consequently, recent efforts have sought to supplement existing dimensional and trait measures of anxiety and depression so as to evaluate instruments that are more concordant with current DSM nosology and that have scales that correspond more closely with specific dimensions of psychiatric disorders e.

Background

Relationship between anxiety severity as measured with the generalized anxiety disorder 7-item GAD-7 scale and decline in functional status as measured with the 6 subscales of the Medical Outcomes Study Short-Form General Health Survey SF The decrement in SF scores is shown as the difference between each GAD-7 scale severity group and the reference group ie, those with GAD-7 scale scores of 0 to 4. Effect size is the difference in group means divided by the SD. Arch Intern Med. The objective of this study was to develop a brief self-report scale to identify probable cases of GAD and evaluate its reliability and validity.
