The Churching of Women.

To belong to the church one must accept as factually true the gospel of Jesus as handed down in tradition and as interpreted by the bishops in union with the pope. Fundamental in this divine tradition is the Bible , its text determined and disseminated by the church. Adherents must also accept the church as possessing the fullness of revelation, and the church, according to the Roman Catholic catechism, is the only Christian body that is one, holy, catholic [universal], and apostolic.

Roman Catholic Church: Beliefs, Doctrines, and Practices

The relationship between times of crisis natural disasters, pandemics and religious behaviour has been the subject of long debate. Theoretical models of religious coping propose that adversity caused by adverse and unexpected events instigates people to use religion more intensively. I found that gender, the type of religious practices and the frequency of pre-pandemic participation are significant predictors of religious intensification. Recent studies on religious behaviours suggest the correlation between fear and beliefs. The literature exposes two causal links: fear motivates religious faith and then the last one mitigates fear Donovan ; Ellis and Wahab ; Jong et al. The former has to do with a feeling of helplessness in the face of annihilation itself. At the base of this notion, there is generally the affirmation of the existence of supernatural beings, the practice of certain rituals and the regulation of behaviours through moral codes.

The Catholic Church , during its long history, has on occasion been subject to criticism regarding various beliefs and practices. Within the Church, this includes differences of opinion regarding the use of Latin at Mass, and the subject of clerical celibacy. In the past, different interpretations of scripture and critiques of clerical laxity and opulence contributed to separations such as the schism with the Eastern Orthodox Church and the Protestant Reformation. The Catholic Church has also been criticized for its active efforts to influence political decisions, such as the Church's promotion of the Crusades and its involvement with various 20th century nationalist regimes. More recent criticism focuses on alleged scandals within the Church, particularly alleged financial corruption and the Catholic Church's sexual abuse scandals.

After the fall of the Western Roman Empire in , the Catholic Church became a powerful social and political institution and its influence spread throughout Europe. The contemporary Catholic Church says that it is the continuation of the early Christian community established by Jesus. Christianity spread throughout the early Roman Empire despite persecutions due to conflicts with the pagan state religion. In , the struggles of the early church were lessened by the legalization of Christianity by the Emperor Constantine I. In , under Emperor Theodosius I, Christianity became the state religion of the Roman Empire by the decree of the emperor, which would persist until the fall of the Western Empire, and later with the Eastern Roman Empire until the fall of Constantinople.
