Relativity, Thermodynamics and Cosmology

General relativity , also known as the general theory of relativity , is the geometric theory of gravitation published by Albert Einstein in and is the current description of gravitation in modern physics. General relativity generalizes special relativity and refines Newton's law of universal gravitation , providing a unified description of gravity as a geometric property of space and time or four-dimensional spacetime. In particular, the curvature of spacetime is directly related to the energy and momentum of whatever matter and radiation are present. The relation is specified by the Einstein field equations , a system of partial differential equations. Some predictions of general relativity differ significantly from those of classical physics , especially concerning the passage of time, the geometry of space, the motion of bodies in free fall , and the propagation of light. The predictions of general relativity in relation to classical physics have been confirmed in all observations and experiments to date. Although general relativity is not the only relativistic theory of gravity , it is the simplest theory that is consistent with experimental data.

Twin paradox pdf. In this paper, from the perspective that the relativity is nothing but a geometry, we give a uniform resolution to some famous 4. Suppose E arth and T raveler are twins on Earth. This paradox in a different form was first presented in by Paul Langevin, in which the emphasis stressed the idea that the acceleration itself was the key element that caused the distinction. My explanation follows Davies?

In this paper we prove that a more general relation uniting both quantities holds regardless of the equation of state satisfied by the medium, and that the original Tolman-Ehrenfest law form is valid only if the chemical potential vanishes identically. In the general case of equilibrium, the temperature and the chemical potential are intertwined in such a way that only a definite position dependent relation uniting both quantities is obeyed. As an illustration of these results, the temperature expressions for an isothermal gas finite spherical distribution and a neutron star are also determined. COVID has impacted many institutions and organizations around the world, disrupting the progress of research. Through this difficult time APS and the Physical Review editorial office are fully equipped and actively working to support researchers by continuing to carry out all editorial and peer-review functions and publish research in the journals as well as minimizing disruption to journal access. We appreciate your continued effort and commitment to helping advance science, and allowing us to publish the best physics journals in the world.

He was a professor of physical chemistry and mathematical physics at the California Institute of Technology Caltech. Tolman was born in West Newton, Massachusetts and studied chemical engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology , receiving his bachelor's degree in and Ph. He married Ruth Sherman Tolman in In a experiment with Thomas Dale Stewart , Tolman demonstrated that electricity consists of electrons flowing through a metallic conductor. A by-product of this experiment was a measured value of the mass of the electron. Tolman was a member of the Technical Alliance in , a forerunner of the Technocracy movement where he helped conduct an energy survey analyzing the possibility of applying science to social and industrial affairs.
