In European academic traditions, fine art is art developed primarily for aesthetics or beauty , distinguishing it from decorative art or applied art , which also has to serve some practical function, such as pottery or most metalwork. In the aesthetic theories developed in the Italian Renaissance , the highest art was that which allowed the full expression and display of the artist's imagination, unrestricted by any of the practical considerations involved in, say, making and decorating a teapot.

Art and design have a lot in common, but they are both distinct disciplines. Many times their meanings are confused and their identities mistaken, but their distinctions stand. Historically, art and design have always blended in visual creativity and production, while many artists identified as designers and vice versa. To avoid unnecessary ambiguity, we can correctly state, a piece of work qualifies to be either a work of design or a piece of art by the process and purpose of its creation. The clear distinctions between the two disciplines can be better explored by answering the questions;.

Like many creatives, I often find myself debating the perpetual question of whether design can be art. I'm going to use this opportunity to say that I don't think that design is art. I see art and design as two different languages. However, I think designers can speak 'art language' make art , and artists can speak 'design language' do design.
