Star formation is the process by which dense regions within molecular clouds in interstellar space , sometimes referred to as "stellar nurseries" or " star -forming regions", collapse and form stars. It is closely related to planet formation , another branch of astronomy. Star formation theory, as well as accounting for the formation of a single star, must also account for the statistics of binary stars and the initial mass function. Most stars do not form in isolation but as part of a group of stars referred as star clusters or stellar associations. A spiral galaxy like the Milky Way contains stars , stellar remnants , and a diffuse interstellar medium ISM of gas and dust. This medium has been chemically enriched by trace amounts of heavier elements that were ejected from stars as they passed beyond the end of their main sequence lifetime. Higher density regions of the interstellar medium form clouds, or diffuse nebulae , [3] where star formation takes place.

Everything has a shadow! Shadows illustrate how three-dimensional objects can be viewed in two dimensions. Students explore the Earth and Sun's postions in relation to the constellations of the ecliptic with a small model. They explore the motions of the Earth and inner planets in a larger classroom-size model. A very interactive and fun activity.

Stars, gas, and interstellar dust orbit the center of the galaxy due to the gravitational attraction of all the other stars. New generations of stars are born out of gas that condenses within regions called giant molecular clouds, and the stars sometimes form into star clusters. When a star reaches the end of its evolution, it may return much of its gas back to the interstellar medium, which will be the source for a new generation of stars. Galaxies can be thought of as systems that turn gas into stars and back again. When we look at a galaxy, the light we see comes from two sources.

Editor's Note: We are posting this feature from our March issue because of news from the annual meeting of the American Astronomical Society about the phenomenon discussed here. We live in a universe that is full of bright objects. On a clear night one can see thousands of stars with the naked eye. These stars occupy merely a small nearby part of the Milky Way galaxy; telescopes reveal a much vaster realm that shines with the light from billions of galaxies. According to our current understanding of cosmology, however, the universe was featureless and dark for a long stretch of its early history. The first stars did not appear until perhaps million years after the big bang , and nearly a billion years passed before galaxies proliferated across the cosmos.

Ever since the Big Bang, the Universe has been drifting and expanding. The birth and death of stars leave an aftermath of galaxies, planets, and even living organisms. Watch the Earth transform from a violent, molten rock to a supporter of life. Discover how astronomers use collective learning to put our planet in its proper place. And learn about Earth's drifting surface that causes earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, and continental "surfing.

The Birth of the Sun
