Intellectual disability ID , also known as general learning disability [3] and formerly mental retardation MR , [4] [5] is a generalized neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by significantly impaired intellectual and adaptive functioning. Having a learning disability means that people find it harder to learn certain life skills. The problems experienced vary from person to person, but may include aspects such as learning new things, communication , managing money, reading, writing, or personal care. Some people are born with a disability, whereas others may develop one as a result of an accident or illness in childhood. Types of learning disabilities differ hugely. Someone with mild disabilities may be able to live independently with minimal support, whereas someone with severe and profound disabilities may require 24 hour care, and help with performing most daily living skills. GDD describes a condition that occurs between birth and the age of 18 which prevents a child from reaching key milestones of development like learning to communicate, processing information, remembering things and organising their thoughts.

When someone with developmental disability presents with behavioral difficulties it can be challenging to determine the underlying cause of such difficulties. Because of their cognitive and adaptive disabilities, individuals with developmental disability are less likely to have developed appropriate coping skills for a variety of stressors. Physicians can provide better care for their patients with dual diagnosis by being familiar with mental health services currently available and by considering some diagnostic challenges and gaps in services illustrated here by several case histories. Several case histories illustrate the challenges faced when caring for patients with cognitive disabilities and co-occuring mental illness. However, there are others this term is used for: children and adults who have lifelong developmental disorders along with co-occurring mental illness and behavioral difficulties.
