Geophysical Inverse Theory and Applications, Second Edition, brings together fundamental results developed by the Russian mathematical school in regularization theory and combines them with the related research in geophysical inversion carried out in the West. It presents a detailed exposition of the methods of regularized solution of inverse problems based on the ideas of Tikhonov regularization, and shows the different forms of their applications in both linear and nonlinear methods of geophysical inversion.

The book is divided in five parts covering the foundations of the inversion theory and its applications to the solution of different geophysical inverse problems, including potential field, electromagnetic, and seismic methods. The main goal of this paper is to characterize a reservoir situated in the southeast of Algeria based on AVO seismic inversion. Reservoir characterization of this field has been given in detail. The high correlated results allowed us to have a vision on the horizontal variation of Petrophysical parameters such as density and lithological variation of three facies clay, tight limestone, and porous limestone. Moreover, this classification is used in the best way to determine the interesting zone with higher porosity values, so that the exploration strategy becomes more efficient with minimized uncertainties. Therefore, it is highly recommended to use the constructed model to propose new wells as well-5 in this study.

The viewpoint and experience base of the authors at least the first author is that of a consumer of seismic inversion as opposed to a provider of inversion software or services or a researcher in inversion. We have assumed that the reader has some knowledge of AVO and statistics. Our treatment of the probabilistic versus deterministic topic is not detailed — we intentionally focus on concepts instead of theory and equations. If we are successful in engaging the reader in this topic, the reader will have many follow-up questions. In the title of this article, we have used the terms deterministic and probabilistic to describe two different approaches to seismic inversion. While the reader may not be familiar with these terms used in the context of inversion, the geoscientists that interpret seismic data, generate structure maps and estimate hydrocarbon volumes of prospects and fields will be familiar with deterministic and probabilistic reserve estimates.

Seismic inversion may be pre- or post- stack , deterministic, random or geostatistical ; it typically includes other reservoir measurements such as well logs and cores. Geophysicists routinely perform seismic surveys to gather information about the geology of an oil or gas field. These surveys record sound waves which have traveled through the layers of rock and fluid in the earth. The amplitude and frequency of these waves can be estimated so that any side-lobe and tuning effects [2] introduced by the wavelet may be removed. Seismic data may be inspected and interpreted on its own without inversion, but this does not provide the most detailed view of the subsurface and can be misleading under certain conditions. Because of its efficiency and quality, most oil and gas companies now use seismic inversion to increase the resolution and reliability of the data and to improve estimation of rock properties including porosity and net pay.
