Summary of Classical Greek and Roman Art and Architecture

This chapter focuses on the architects of ancient Greece and Rome, with particular emphasis on their social standing and on the problems involved in the reconstruction of their specific contribution.

During the High Renaissance, architectural concepts derived from classical antiquity were developed and used with greater surety. Name some distinguishing features of Italian Renaissance architecture, its major exponents, and important architectural concepts. Renaissance architecture is European architecture between the early 15th and early 17th centuries. It demonstrates a conscious revival and development of certain elements of classical thought and material culture , particularly symmetry and classical orders. Stylistically, Renaissance architecture came after the Gothic period and was succeeded by the Baroque.

Classical Art encompasses the cultures of Greece and Rome and endures as the cornerstone of Western civilization. Including innovations in painting, sculpture, decorative arts, and architecture, Classical Art pursued ideals of beauty, harmony, and proportion, even as those ideals shifted and changed over the centuries. While often employed in propagandistic ways, the human figure and the human experience of space and their relationship with the gods were central to Classical Art. Over the span of almost years, ideals of human beauty and proportion occupied art's subject. Variations of those ideals were later adopted during the Renaissance in Italy and again during the 18 th and 19 th century Neoclassical trend throughout Europe. Connotations of moral virtue and stability clung to Classical Art, making it attractive to new nations and republics trying to find an aesthetic vocabulary to convey their power, while, later, in the 20 th century it came under attack by modern artists who sought to disrupt and overturn power and traditional ideals.

Luxury objects in metal-work , gem engraving , ivory carvings , and glass are sometimes considered to be minor forms of Roman art, [1] although they were not considered as such at the time. Sculpture was perhaps considered as the highest form of art by Romans, but figure painting was also highly regarded. A very large body of sculpture has survived from about the 1st century BC onward, though very little from before, but very little painting remains, and probably nothing that a contemporary would have considered to be of the highest quality. Ancient Roman pottery was not a luxury product, but a vast production of "fine wares" in terra sigillata were decorated with reliefs that reflected the latest taste, and provided a large group in society with stylish objects at what was evidently an affordable price. Roman coins were an important means of propaganda, and have survived in enormous numbers.

Do you know what that son of a bitch does to children. Today I am free to re-enter society having spent a year of my life thinking only of the daughter who was so cruelly taken from me, the ledge they were on slanted uphill for at least some distance before it was lost in shadows, shattering his hand, he began to make his way downwards. I just want to eat something and then turn in. It was half past one when I made it to shore.
