It is an exceptionally good read. The 77 pages are written succinctly with no waffle - just straight to the point.
Autism Spectrum Disorder ASD is a complex neurodevelopmental disorder, characterized by impaired social communication and restricted and repetitive behaviours, as well as associated features including intellectual disability and impaired sensorimotor function. Despite a growing interest in this devastating disorder for families and young parents, there are no certainties as regards its aetiology, although a significant genetic background is considered to be important. Since there is little information about the social adaptation and quality of life of patients with Autism Spectrum Disorder, we decided to study and evaluate the long-term outcome and quality of life in a sample of children, adolescent and young adults. This is a case study of subjects diagnosed with ASD and followed by clinics and rehabilitation centers in Campania region, in the south of Italy. The study sample was composed by patients 83 males, 27 females , aged between 8.
It is a relatively new diagnosis in the field of autism. An English psychiatrist, Lorna Wing , popularized the term "Asperger's syndrome" in a publication; the first book in English on Asperger syndrome was written by Uta Frith in and the condition was subsequently recognized in formal diagnostic manuals later in the s. As a result, he spent most of his professional life in Vienna. Throughout Asperger's career, he was also a pediatrician, medical theorist, and medical professor. Asperger's work, Autistic psychopathy in childhood , found that four of the children studied had difficulty with integrating themselves socially.
Life course health development LCHD incorporates theories and empirical evidence from the biological, physical, and social sciences to formulate a framework that explains how health develops over the life course. The life course health development conceptual framework can be applied to autism spectrum disorders ASD to help prioritize a research agenda and improve health development across the lifespan for individuals with ASD, their families, and communities. The following chapter highlights some issues and findings that are pertinent to an understanding of ASD using the lens of the life course health development principles. The chapter begins with a description of the clinical phenotype, followed by epidemiology of the disorder, and reviews changes in classification and diagnosis over time. Pathogenesis of the disorder is discussed, including information pertaining to hereditability, genetic and nongenetic factors, epigenetics, biomarkers, and genotype-phenotype correlations. Long-term follow-up outcome studies of adult independence and quality of life are reviewed, including examination of predictors of outcome, as well as stability of the diagnosis, symptom presentation, and cognitive functioning over time.
Asperger syndrome: an update. This article provides an overview of the history and clinical features of Asperger syndrome, and considers guidelines for clinical assessment and treatment. A review of issues related to external validity is provided, which points out the limitations of current research, and lists several potentially beneficial areas of investigation into the nosologic status of the condition. It concludes with a discussion of the unequivocal need of individuals with severe social disabilities for comprehensive and adequate educational services and other treatments irrespective of the fact that the validity and the utility of this specific diagnostic concept is far from resolved. Keywords: Asperger syndrome. Pervasive developmental disorder.
Metrics details. Working memory is a temporary storage system under attentional control. It is believed to play a central role in online processing of complex cognitive information and may also play a role in social cognition and interpersonal interactions. Adolescents with a disorder on the autism spectrum display problems in precisely these domains. Social impairments, communication difficulties, and repetitive interests and activities are core domains of autism spectrum disorders ASD , and executive function problems are often seen throughout the spectrum. As the main cognitive theories of ASD, including the theory of mind deficit hypotheses, weak central coherence account, and the executive dysfunction theory, still fail to explain the broad spectrum of symptoms, a new perspective on the etiology of ASD is needed. Deficits in working memory are central to many theories of psychopathology, and are generally linked to frontal-lobe dysfunction.
More and more people are being diagnosed as autistic, although we still have a long way to go in creating a world that works for autistic people. In , Hans Asperger new evidence about his problematic history has recently been revealed and provoked a big debate in Vienna had published an account of children with many similarities to Kanner autism but who had abilities, including grammatical language, in the average or superior range. There are continuing arguments concerning the exact relationship between Asperger and Kanner syndromes but it is beyond dispute that they have in common the triad of impairments of social interaction, communication and imagination and a narrow, repetitive pattern of activities Wing, ;
Metrics details. However, long-term follow-up studies, evaluating the possibility of long-lasting retention effects, are currently lacking. Using a double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled, parallel design, this pilot clinical trial explored the possibility of long-lasting behavioral effects of 4 weeks of intranasal oxytocin treatment 24 International Units once daily in the morning in 40 adult men with ASD. To do so, self-report and informant-based questionnaires assessing core autism symptoms and characterizations of attachment were administered at baseline, immediately after 4 weeks of treatment approximately 24 h after the last nasal spray administration , and at two follow-up sessions, 4 weeks and 1 year post-treatment. No treatment-specific effects were identified in the primary outcome assessing social symptoms Social Responsiveness Scale, self- and informant-rated. While no treatment-specific improvements were evident in terms of core social symptoms, the current observations of long-term beneficial effects on repetitive behaviors and feelings of avoidance are promising and suggestive of a therapeutic potential of oxytocin treatment for ASD.
