Change in the Villages.
This course begins with an exploration of how media, culture and society intersect. We discuss the history and development of media technologies such as print and electronic media and use analytical tools that help us evaluate the impact of media on society. This is followed by a brief history of three broad communication revolutions: print, visual, and electronic. In the second half of the semester we then examine more closely the relationship between media, democracy and citizenship by investigating political economy, news construction, media effects, and media texts. Learn how to distinguish mass media from other types of media and gain a better understanding of how various forms of communication developed over time.
